At Phyl’s Academy, intellectual curiosity and critical thinking take center stage, and this was evident on January 26th during the much-anticipated Grades 3-6 debates.The halls are buzzing with excitement and pride as the results of the Debate Competition have been announced. The cheers, the camaraderie, and the spirit of healthy competition have reached a crescendo as the scores are in and the standings are clear! (Photos Below)
Sub Juniors (Grades 3 & 4) – Academic Excellence vs. Athletic Prowess
The debates kicked off at 9:00 a.m. with the Sub Juniors, a group comprising the bright minds of Grades 3 and 4. The topic of the day was carefully chosen to encourage students to reflect on their values and priorities: “Is it better to be good at academics or to be good at sports?”
Representing Blue House, the team speaking FOR the topic passionately argued the benefits of being skilled in sports, emphasizing physical health, teamwork, and the valuable life lessons learned on the field. On the opposing side, Red House eloquently defended the importance of academic achievements, highlighting the intellectual skills, knowledge, and future opportunities that a strong academic foundation can provide.
The debate not only showcased the students’ ability to present their arguments coherently but also highlighted their understanding of the balance needed between academic and physical pursuits. Here are the results!
1. Red House – Sub Juniors Debate Champions!

- Speakers: Rolando A. Facey, Jalah Quarles, Tarek L. Volmar Red House emerges victorious with an impressive performance led by their skilled team members.
2. Blue House – Second Place
- Team Captain: Rae’dyn A. Mills
- Speakers: Journey J. Petersen, Nyarai A. McLaughlin (Finals), Zane Miller (Prelims), Danielle A. Hayles Blue House puts up a strong fight and secures a well-deserved second place.
3. Yellow House – Third Place
- Team Captain: Brooklyn Newkirk
- Speakers: Daniel A. Munroe, Alexandria J. Miles, Karl Jayceon C. Hughes Yellow House, with their dedication and enthusiasm, claims the third spot.
4. Green House – Fourth Place
- Team Captain: Kylie R. McGregor
- Speakers: Amelia O. Henry, Chloe M. Greene, Chase K. Mitchel Green House, showcased commendable teamwork and sportsmanship.
Juniors Debate (Grades 5-6) – Parental Monitoring in the Digital Age
The discussions continued at 9:45 a.m. with the Juniors, consisting of Grades 5 and 6 students. The topic for this older group was a contemporary one: “Should parents track their children’s locations and cell phone usage?”
Yellow House took the stance FOR parental monitoring, presenting compelling arguments about safety, responsible technology use, and the role of parents in guiding their children through the challenges of the digital age. Red House, on the other hand, argued AGAINST excessive monitoring, emphasizing the importance of trust, privacy, and the development of independence in children.

- Speakers: KY-Mani E. Brown, Joshua Arthurs, Uriah N. Enwright Red House continues their winning streak, securing the top spot in the Juniors category as well.
2. Yellow House – Second Place
- Team Captain: Kaiden T. Skeen
- Speakers: A’mera Emmanuel, Kristyn A. Goodridge, Kymora A. Forchin Yellow House maintains a strong presence, claiming the second position.
3. Blue House – Third Place
- Team Captain: Rusheene Steers
- Speakers: Lamar A. Levene, Zachariah N. Burke, Kaliyah K. Chery Blue House, with their spirited efforts, secures the third spot in the Juniors category.
4. Green House – Fourth Place
- Team Captain: Zoey A. Amadi
- Speakers: Kaylee E. Francois Francois, Kyle K. Worrel, Joshua E. Warren Green House, demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the competition.
