Extracurricular Activities

There are a variety of activities for students to join throughout the year.

Phyl’s provide students with extracurricular activities that falls outside the realm of the normal curriculum of school. Diversity in clubs and extracurricular activities plays an important role in adolescent lives and futures. Each activitiy is arranged to help the students’ development. We strongly encourage all students to take part in at least 1 activity and to become involved with the school.

Band

The Phyl’s Academy Concert Band offers students from Grades 4 to 12 the opportunity to learn music in a safe and fun environment as part of our school’s extra-curricular program. The Band is an important part of our school’s student life, performing at all major functions such as the school’s opening and closing ceremonies, graduations and other major events.

Students of all musical skill levels are welcome to join our Band. The Band itself is comprised of standard concert band instruments such as the flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and the saxophone just to name a few. Owing to our school’s overall Caribbean heritage, the steel drum as well as the African drums are taught as well. The Band has a full rhythm section which includes electronic musical instruments such as the keyboard, the bass and electric rhythm guitar. In addition to these instruments, the Concert Band also offers students the opportunity to learn traditional marching percussion instruments as part of our Percussion Ensemble.

As the Band continues to grow it has been fortunate to see its members advance to continue to study and play music at college level and boasts of a rich cadre of former students who are currently actively involved in some of the top college bands in the state.

Basketball

Our after school basketball program is a weekday afternoon activity for aspiring young players from Grades 3 to 12. Boys and girls are encouraged to join regardless of their skill level. The instructional sessions are a combination of essential skills and team competition with a view to providing a fun and educational after school physical and athletic experience.

Track and Field

Track and Field is a great activity to help build speed and concentration in young people. Running track trains the entire body to work together to achieve optimum speed and agility results. Our athletes seek to develop a strong sense of self confidence, a strong desire to win and a commitment to regular training and exercise to make it happen. This activity helps young people learn to set long and short term timing goals as well as visualize where their training and effort will take them.

Swimming

Phyl’s Academy is committed to ensuring that all of our students are trained in water safety. Florida’s neighborhoods have thousands of pools, lakes and waterways that pose potential dangers for children. When children are taught to swim and survive in water, this lessens the likelihood of a drowning accident. Our students are also trained in swim technique and every year we build competitive swim teams within our elementary, middle and high school student body.

Tennis

Phyl’s Academy is committed to promoting healthy life habits to encourage independence and critical thinking. Tennis is an individual game, and teaches children to take responsibility for every action as they can see the direct cause and effect of every stroke. They gain by focusing on their game, and they learn to concentrate for long periods at a time. They learn how to deal with wins and losses gracefully, and the perseverance to work on weaknesses to experience victory. These will prepare them for challenges in the classroom as well as the playing field.
