Pre-School at Phyl’s Academy

The Early Childhood student is a very interesting one. In comparison to the other age groups, this student undergoes the largest physical and mental changes within a school year. These students must develop new gross motor, fine motor, and intellectual skills, while adjusting to their new environment. For many younger students, this is their first experience with non-family members, and their first exposure to a social environment of their peers.

At Phyl’s Academy our comfortable, nurturing environment helps to ease the transition as they grow and adjust in these formative years. Classrooms divided into learning centers intrinsically foster academic, social, and cognitive development, while entertaining the students as they explore and discover. Our program encourages development through a curriculum based in storytelling, reading-readiness, pre-math skills, environment (the world around us), and artistic expression. Concrete activities allow the children to learn through their physical senses and ensure that each lesson is an experience they will remember.

Our Preschool has been given a 5-Star+ rating by Broward County’s Quality Rating and Improvement System for the 2012-2013.

Kindergarten at Phyl’s Academy

Current education philosophy now supports and encourages students to be introduced to reading at a young age. At Phyl’s Academy, we have always supported this philosophy. In the Kindergarten year we continue to introduce our students to the pleasures of reading through a simple curriculum based on discovery, observation and phonetic instruction.

Our well-rounded curriculum includes reading, mathematics, social studies, science, art, and an introduction to computers/iPads. Our daily schedule includes physical activities, learning centers, block play, storytelling, and lessons based on concrete activities that encourage our students to develop their physical senses. By the end of a Phyl’s Academy Kindergarten year, our students are reading fluently. With their developing skills and confidence, they are well prepared to handle the Elementary School years that lie ahead.

Elementary School at Phyl’s Academy

During the Elementary School years, the students’ intellects are gradually developing to include abstract thought patterns. As their world expands beyond their homes and classrooms, they begin to observe and question life. We utilize their inquisitive nature by providing many opportunities for exploration, investigation and discovery within their classrooms, and through field trips into new environments.

In these grades, our academic curriculum expands to include Foreign Language, Computer Literacy, Language Arts, Reading Comprehension, Oral Presentation, Creative Writing, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Multicultural Studies, Physical Education, and Art. Special projects like the science fairs and social studies fair, black expo, art exhibitions and spelling bees encourage our students to work cooperatively with their peers, enhancing the learning experience while fostering social development. Through a creative approach to instruction, students realize the connection between seemingly abstract subjects and the world at large. At Phyl’s Academy students develop the ability to think independently, to solve problems, and the confidence to utilize these skills in life.

Middle School at Phyl’s Academy

During the Middle School years, pre-teen students begin to explore life beyond their childhood horizons. Intellectually and physically, they are changing and growing in new ways. They are beginning to experience maturity and all its challenges, and much of life is unfamiliar territory. As their experiences expand, these students begin to seek answers and search for their own independent voice.

At Phyl’s Academy, we provide many opportunities for Middle school students to broaden their perspectives through a well-rounded curriculum, field trips, research skill development, and the latest available technology. Expanded organizational skills which will prepare them for a smooth transition into high school, college and the greater world.
